While planning your next family vacation, here are a few Jamaican fun facts to get the entire family excited about their Round Hill getaway:

Authentic Jamaican Games

Many childhood toys, games and gadgets are made from recyclable household items. They require very little effort and are perfect for physical distancing.

An all time favourite, Dandy Shandy, is a Jamaican version of the US dodgeball. The game is played with a ball (usually made from used small carton box, stuffed with dray wastepaper), and at least three players. The aim of the game is to hit the member of the opposing team with the ball while your partner tries to catch the ball. The member of the opposing team must skillfully dodge the ball as many times as possible by swiftly running to the opposite side of the player with the ball in hand. One hit, and you’re out!

The Language of the People

Patios is Jamaica’s official creole language – which is English-based with West African influences. The language is widely spoken in Jamaica and the Jamaican diaspora – with each region of the island having a specific dialect unique to their community. The Rhythm of the Land

Reggae is a genre of music that originated in Jamaica during the late 1960s. Grammy – Award winning artist, Toots Hibbert coined the term for the music which became a global phenomenon in Britain, Africa and the United States through the message of Bob Marley & the Wailers. Reggae generated from an earlier form of Jamaica music, Ska and features heavy four- beat rhythm with drums, bass guitar, electric guitar and a scrapper – which is a corrugated stick that is rubbed by a plain stick.
